The Great Rivers Greenway District is developing a network of greenways, parks and trails, known as the River Ring which encircles the entire St. Louis region. As part of the greenway development effort, Great Rivers Greenway commissioned a team, led by Intuition & Logic and assisted by Loomis Associates, to develop an alignment study for the Western Greenway. This parcel of the river ring provides the north-south connection between the Meramec River Greenway and the Missouri River Greenway. The Western Greenway is unique to the River Ring in that it traverses extremely rugged terrain not found anywhere else in St. Louis County.

A technical advisory committee comprised of GRG, the City of Wildwood, Missouri Department of Conservation, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, and St. Louis County Parks was formed to review recommendations of the consultant team and guided the process of prioritizing certain segments of the trail. I&L analyzed dozens of connections, destinations, and alignments to determine feasibility, practicality and alignment priority. The alignment study report presented the trail segments and projects that will combine to form the backbone of the Western Greenway. This specific data contains information about each part of the trail and project regarding its' accessibility, constructability, impacts to natural resources, and connections.
